World Kidney Day
Mar 10th 2025
Kidneys are paired, bean-shaped organs that filter approximately 50 gallons of blood daily. Kidneys play a role in maintaining electrolyte balance and producing hormones involved in blood pressure regulation, such as renin, which is part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.1
Over 100 million U.S. citizens experience high blood pressure2, with 37 million individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD)3. Potential risk factors include hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and a family history of kidney failure. To mitigate the risk of developing kidney disease, it is recommended to stay hydrated, manage blood pressure and blood sugar levels, consume a low-sodium diet, engage in regular physical activity, and avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.4
Acute kidney disease (AKI) may result from trauma, severe infection, dehydration or nephrotoxic medicationsresulting in a sudden decline in kidney function.5
IBL-America offers a variety of unique biomarker assays that may be useful while studying acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney diseases (CKD).
- Measurement of Galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) levels may provide information on the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN), a leading renal disease.
- Klotho levels are decreased in AKI and CKD.
- Uromodulin is exclusively produced by the kidneys and is the most abundant protein in normal urine.
- Complement has been shown to have roles in immune-complex glomerulonephritis and the pathogenesis of many non-immune-complex mediated kidney diseases.
IBL-America also offers kits for aldosterone, renin, angiotensin (what kits are offered?). Please contact us to learn more about our ELISA offerings available for kidney function an.
