Enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) for the determination of human IgG antibodies directed against Legionella pneumophila serotypes 1 to 7 in serum or plasma (EDTA, citrate, heparin). For research use only, not for use in diagnostic procedures.

Legionella belongs to the species of legionellaceae, genus Legionella. It is a gram negative, aerobic, plemorphic non-spore forming bacillus which is motile by means of a single or multiple polar or subpolar flagella. Currently, the genus has 39 Legionella species which, due to their immunological diversity, are divided into serogroups. The most important human pathogen is the species Legionella pneumophila which is comprised of 14 serological groups. Most Legionella associated pneumonias (80 to 85 %) are caused by serogroups 1-6.

Legionella are ubiquitous bacteria, residing in surface and drinking water and multiplying in amoebae and other protozoa. Warm water systems with a temperature of 25 to 45 °C are ideal for their multiplication. After transmission to humans in aerosols, the bacteria are phagocytized by alveolar macrophages. So called evasion mechanisms enable the bacteria not only to survive but also to multiply within the phagocytic cells.
