Immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) for the determination of human Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) in serum. For research use only, not for use in diagnostic procedures.

The glycolytic enzyme enolase (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydrolase, EC 4.2.1.11) exists as several dimeric isoenzymes (αα, αβ, αγ, ββ and γγ). The γγ and αγ enolase isoenzymes are also known as neuron- specific enolase (NSE) as they are produced in central and peripheral neurons and malignant tumors of neuroectodermal origin.

Elevated serum concentrations of NSE are detected in patients with medullar carcinoma of the thyroid, pancreatic islet cell tumor, pheochromocytoma carcinoid, neuroblastoma and small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC).
