Tissue inhibitor of Metalloprotinase 1 (TIMP-1) is endogenous-specific inhibitor produced simultaneously with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP). TIMP-1 inhibits both active MMP to control degeneration of extracellular matrix (ECM) and conversion of intermediate form into active form. In addition, TIMP-1 forms complex with not only active MMP but also potential MMP. Especially, TIMP-1 binds to potential MMP-9 by affinity of C-terminal domain to one another. The degeneration of extracellular matrix is essential step in invasion and metastasis of tumor cell. It is considered that tumor cell collects protease on the surface of cell and degenerates ECM in invading tissue. For research use only, not for use in diagnostic procedures.
